What are chemical peels?

A chemical skin peel is when a chemical solution is applied to the skin, usually on the face, to remove the top layers. Not only does this get rid of old skin cells but the skin that does grow back is smoother, brighter and younger-looking.

Here, we explore exactly what chemical peels can be used for. But if you’d like to book an appointment or have any questions about our treatments, please get in touch with our skin clinic.

What are chemical peels used for?

Chemical peels are used to rejuvenate and resurface the skin and stimulate healthy regrowth. It’s commonly used to treat:

Are there different types of chemical peels?

As the solution contains chemicals, treatments come into different depths – from light to deep. A light depth peel, or superficial chemical peel, is the lowest level of treatment and removes the epidermis – the outer layer of the skin. This type of treatment is best-suited to fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, uneven skin tone and small areas of acne.

A medium depth chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and the dermis – the middle layer of your skin. This type of peel can be used to treat the same concerns as a light chemical peel but is also effective at minimising acne scarring.

Finally, a deep chemical peel removes the most amount of skin cells and is used for deep wrinkles, aged scarring and even precancerous growths.

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Chemical peels are usually carried out on the face, including the nose, but other common areas for treatment include:

How does it work?

Chemical peels are a non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin. We typically use a soft brush to apply the chemical solution, which is made up of glycolic or salicylic acid. This gentle and unique blend of acids provides an effective peel to improve the look and feel of your skin. It also helps to gently exfoliate the skin’s top damaged layers, leaving your complexion fresh, renewed and radiant.

Does it hurt?

You may feel a slight tingling sensation but this means it’s working. Your skin will begin to whiten, and we’ll then use a neutralising solution to wipe the chemical peel away. Depending on the level of peel you choose, pain relief isn’t usually required. After the treatment, your skin will be slightly red but this is completely normal.

What to expect

When you get in touch with the team at Surrey Laser Clinic, we’ll begin by reviewing your medical history to determine whether a chemical peel is suitable for you. A physical examination of your skin, including its tone and thickness, will then be carried out. Once done, we’ll be able to discuss your desired results and explain how many treatments you may need.

Yes, most skin types can benefit from chemical peel treatments. However, we assess each case on an individual basis and will be able to advise on the best course of treatment for you and your skin. There are some skin conditions that shouldn’t be treated with skin peels.

Usually, a chemical peel takes around 30 minutes.

No. Your skin may be slightly red for a few hours but you can get back to your normal activities straight away. We just advise you to stay out of the sun for around two weeks and use appropriate products to prevent sun damage.

The Motus AY uses a sapphire cooling tip to soothe the surface of the skin during treatment to help protect against any uncomfortable sensations, burns, and pigmentation changes. The system uses different wavelengths to gradually heat up the skin to a temperature that damages the hair follicles to reduce and eliminate hair regrowth without harming the surrounding tissue.

Results can be seen in as little as one treatment but we usually advise a course of treatments. Your therapist will discuss this with you though.

A lot of our clients notice a difference immediately. The effects of the treatment will continue to improve and work for up to a year. Natural aging processes mean that wrinkles and fine lines will occur, but typically results of skin rejuvenation last for many years.
