Not All Vitamin C is Born Equal

It’s fair to say that vitamin C has had a MOMENT in skincare in the last five years.

It’s not surprising, given the fact that this powerful antioxidant has many skin benefits, including helping to brighten and protect the skin.

Vitamin C is pretty complex when it comes to skin formulations, as we’re about to reveal. It’s important to note that not all vitamin C products out there are equal. Read on to find out why!

What’s so great about Vitamin C?

Let’s begin with a few reasons why we recommend incorporating vitamin C into most skincare routines. This multifunctional powerhouse ingredient is a major antioxidant, which means it will defend your skin against free radical damage from environmental aggressors, like pollution and UV rays.

It works seamlessly at both the surface level and deep down, to protect skin DNA for optimal cellular health. It also helps support the body’s natural production of collagen, which improves the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring.

If you’re concerned about hyperpigmentation or dull skin (who isn’t?), then vitamin C is a great active ingredient to add to your routine as it helps to even out the skin tone and brighten.

As an anti-inflammatory ingredient, vitamin C helps combat the signs of ageing, as there is a very close link between ageing and inflammation in the body. Vitamin C also supports the skin’s natural production of hydration in the long term, helping to keep the skin in optimal condition.

The big secret is that vitamin C is NOT seasonal; you can use it year-round! Vitamin C is a key ingredient in fighting pigmentation, making it your go-to post-summer saviour and as we begin to move into the cooler months, the environment will soon start to change, and as we get cold and the heat goes on, our skin is likely to suffer, becoming dry or dehydrated and looking dull. Once again, call on vitamin C for antioxidant support, extra hydration, and that radiant glow.

Are you Clinic Ready?

Thinking about an in-clinic treatment?

Or already have a booking?

Then we have good news for you, you can boost your results! No matter what your treatment is, from microneedling to chemical peels, YOU can improve your skin outcome.

Everything you do in the weeks before and after will have an impact on your treatment, from the skincare you use, to how much sleep you get. We like to think about prepping for a treatment like prepping for a marathon.

If you’ve been a coach potato and turn up to run a marathon your outcome will never be as good as if you’ve spent time training and readying your body to perform on the day. Similarly, if your skin is in really good condition on the day of your treatment, your results will be even better! So don’t save all the good skincare for afterward, your treatment isn’t the beginning, today is!

When it comes to your skin pro, they will be thrilled if your skin is at its best on the day of treatment. It means they can potentially go deeper, stronger, and harder meaning they will have more fun and you’ll get both amazing results and the best value too! Plus, if your skin is more resilient and stronger there’s a chance your pro will be able to combine more than one skin treatment at your appointment, so you might be able to have, for example, an enzymatic peel followed by some light-based therapy.

It’s the same with your recovery, if you follow good aftercare, you will have better and quicker results. There’s so much you can do outside of your treatment slot to get your skin in prime condition before you even walk through the clinic door.

Here are our top 5 hacks, so don’t delay and start today!

No 1 Take a look at your wellbeing.

Focusing on your gut health as any inflammation here will often show up on the skin as redness, dullness, or breakouts. Then there’s sleep, intrinsic to skin health and recovery, so ensure you get enough in the weeks leading up to your treatment.

No 2 Prep with Medical-Grade Skincare to Get Great Results

Don’t save your precious AlumierMD skincare for after your treatment. Work with your pro to ensure your daily skin routine is working hard for your skin goals and needs. If your skin is in tip-top condition when you walk through the clinic door your treatments will be even more successful.

No 3 Do at-home facials.

In the weeks leading up to your treatment spend a bit of extra time on a weekly or bi-weekly at home facial. Ask your pro for a mask recommendation; you can also read about face masks in our Halloween blog post.

No 4 Set your pro a challenge

Arrive at the clinic with such good skin that your pro will need to work extra hard to take it to the next level!

No 5 Follow the aftercare routine set by your pro

Your pro will advise you on what to use when for the first few weeks after your treatment. If you follow it to the letter, you will have better and quicker results, can’t say fairer than that!

Microneedling

Microneedling – It’s Trickery and here is why….

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves the use of a handheld device with fine needles to create small, controlled punctures (micro-injuries) in the skin.

During a microneedling procedure, we use a pen-like device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. The depth of penetration can be adjusted based on the specific needs of the client and the area being treated.

The micro-injuries created by the needles trigger the body’s natural healing response. As the skin repairs itself, this will induce Collagen Production, new collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

  • Microneedling can help improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • It is used to minimize the appearance of scars, including acne scars and surgical scars.
  • Microneedling can contribute to smoother skin texture and improved tone.
  • The micro-channels created during the procedure can enhance the absorption of topical skincare products.

Microneedling is commonly used to address various skin concerns, including aging skin, acne scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin texture.

The downtime after microneedling is typically minimal, clients may experience redness and mild swelling for a day or two. Complete recovery time varies from person to person.

The number of sessions required depends on the specific skin concerns being addressed. Some people see results after just one session, while others may need multiple sessions for optimal results.

Chemical Peels

The Lowdown on Skin Peels

We use Alumier MD here at Surrey Laser Clinic and the benefits of a skin peel are incredible.

Firstly let me tell you a bit about Alumier, specifically the peels –
AlumierMD’s skin peels are designed to help with skin concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin texture.

These peels typically contain a combination of acids and other active ingredients that help exfoliate the outer layer of the skin, stimulate collagen production, and improve overall skin health and appearance.

Are there different types of Skin peels?
The solution contains chemicals, treatments come in different depths – from light to deep.

A light depth peel, or superficial skin peel, is the lowest level of treatment and removes the epidermis – the outer layer of the skin. This type of treatment is best-suited to fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, uneven
skin tone and small areas of acne.
A medium depth peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and the dermis – the middle layer of your skin. This type of peel can be used to treat the same concerns as a light chemical peel but is also effective at minimising acne scarring.
Finally, a deep skin peel removes the most amount of skin cells and is used for deep wrinkles, aged scarring and even pigmentation.

How does it work?
Skin peels are a non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin. After Skin cleansing and enhancing the treatment with a hydrating mask, you will feel a tingling sensation due to the activity of the hydrating mask.

We use a soft brush to apply the chemical solution, which is made up of a gentle and unique blend of acids, this gives a mild tingling and sensation of warmth.

Followed by a neutralising process to restore natural skin PH level with a
gentle massage with Alumier MD Recovery Balm and of course SPF Protection with Physical Sunscreen.

Alumier Skin Peels provides an effective way to improve the look and feel of your skin. It also helps to gently exfoliate the skin’s top damaged layers, leaving your complexion fresh, renewed and radiant.

Laser Hair Removal

Is there an Ideal Time to Start My Laser Hair Removal Journey?

YES! ….. there is

Starting laser hair removal in Autumn/Winter is a really clever decision for many reasons –

Sad, but true with reduced Sunshine Exposure during these months and also that we tend to spend more time indoors due to cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours, make it the perfect time to start.

This reduced sun exposure is beneficial because laser hair removal is most effective on untanned skin. Sun exposure can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of side effects like hyperpigmentation or burns.

We wear more clothes – In the colder months, we wear more clothing that cover the treated areas, making it easier to protect the skin from sun exposure immediately after a session. This can help prevent potential complications and ensure a smoother recovery.

Laser hair removal typically requires multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart to target hair follicles at different stages of growth. Choosing to start the process as autumn & winter draws in, gives you several months to complete the full series of treatments before spring graces us with its presence and then of course summer, when you might want to show off your beautiful smooth skin.

Laser hair removal can make your skin more sensitive for a short period after each session. The cooler months can be more comfortable for those with sensitive skin, as they are less likely to experience discomfort due to heat or sunburn.

It’s important to note that, regardless of the season, you should always follow the guidelines provided when it comes to protecting your skin from sun exposure during and after laser hair removal. Sunscreen and protective clothing are essential throughout the entire treatment process to ensure the best results and minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Thread Vein Removal

How we can help you with Thread Vein Removal

We had a lady visit us here at Surrey Laser Clinic asking for help with the thread veins that she had, we were of course happy to help.

Using our NdYag Laser, we were blown away by the results after just 3 treatments. The Picture you see above is from left to right, before we began, then immediately after treatment in the middle and finally on the right, after 3 treatments! Wow!

What are Thread Veins?
Thread veins, sometimes known as spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin.

What Causes Them?

There are several factors that can cause or contribute to the development of thread veins:

Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy, menopause, or as a result of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, can contribute to the development of thread veins.

Genetics, a family history of thread veins can increase your risk of developing them as well as just aging, as we get older, the elasticity of their blood vessels can diminish, leading to the development of thread veins.

Sun exposure, prolonged exposure to the sun can damage the skin and the blood vessels underneath, making thread veins more likely to form, simularly injuries/trauma to the skin can damage blood vessels and result in the formation of thread veins.

Standing or sitting for long periods does not help, this can increase the risk of thread veins, especially in the legs, due to the increased pressure on the veins, along with excess body weight, this can increase pressure on the blood vessels in the legs and contribute to the development of thread veins, especially in the lower limbs.

Women are more likely than men to develop thread veins, especially during and after pregnancy, smoking can contribute to poor circulation and skin damage, which may increase the risk and excessive alcohol consumption can dilate blood vessels and lead to the development of thread veins, particularly on the face.

Of course it is not all bad news – we are on hand to help you should you be concerned about the appearance of any thread veins you may have, book in for a Skin Consultation with one of our Experts here and we will always give you our best advice.

How to get rid of large pores and fine lines using Microneedling?

Microneedling can be so beneficial if you are wanting help with fine lines and large pores. It is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that tricks your skin with the use of a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries. It is this that will stimulate the body’s natural healing response and the production of collagen and elastin.

Here’s how –

Collagen Stimulation ~ Microneedling promotes the production of collagen, a protein that gives the skin its firmness and elasticity. As we get older, collagen production decreases which leads to the formation of fine lines and enlarged pores.

Microneedling helps to increase collagen production, which can improve the appearance of both issues.

Pore Size Reduction ~ The micro-injuries created during microneedling can trigger the skin’s healing process. This process includes the formation of new, healthier, shinier skin cells and a more even distribution of collagen.

Over time, this can lead to a reduction in the size and appearance of enlarged pores.

Fine Line Reduction ~ Fine lines and wrinkles are the natural result of collagen loss and skin aging. Microneedling can encourage the skin to produce more collagen, which can plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Of course, results may vary from person to person, with the effectiveness of microneedling for large pores and fine lines depending on individual factors ~ skin type, age, and the severity of the issues.

Additionally, there may be other cosmetic treatments or skincare routines that can complement the effects of microneedling for a more comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation.

Chemical Peels

What is an Alumier Skin Peel?

An Alumier chemical skin peel is when a chemical solution is applied to the skin, usually on the face, to remove the top layer of skin, reaching the deeper layer. Not only does this get rid of old skin cells but the skin that does then rejuvenate through this exfoliation and refinement, is smoother, brighter and younger-looking. What are Skin Peels Used for? Skin peels are used to rejuvenate and resurface the skin and stimulate healthy regrowth, also

·      Wrinkles

·      Signs of ageing

·      Discoloured areas of skin

·      Scarring

·      Acne

Are there different types of Skin peels? As the solution contains chemicals, treatments come into different depths from light to deep.   A light depth peel, or superficial skin peel, is the lowest level of treatment and removes the epidermis – the outer layer of the skin. This type of treatment is best-suited to fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, uneven skin toneand small areas of acne. A medium depth chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and the dermis – the middle layer of your skin. This type of peel can be used to treat the same concerns as a light chemical peel but is also effective at minimising acne scarring. Skin peels are a non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin. We typically use a soft brush to apply the chemical solution, which is made up of glycolic or salicylic acid. This gentle and unique blend of acids provides an effective peel to improve the look and feel of your skin. It also helps to gently exfoliate the skin’s top damaged layers, leaving your complexion fresh, renewed and radiant. If you are thinking about a Chemical Peel, perhaps you want to discuss your options, and the pros and cons, in more detail.
